Snuck in a quick nine when the rain died down and the crowds had given up. Rough is getting worse. It is totally unfair, but with rain now almost everyday for a week, it's growing like wildfire and difficult to get cut with everything so wet. It's got to be 7-8 inches deep in some places. Cost me dearly on at least two shots. Not to mention how difficult it is to find balls in the rough. It's no fun. Luckily I kept most drives in the fairway today.
Rough cost me on par 5 5th when drive went just a bit left and into what is normally very comfortable rough to play out of. I play from there often. I typically can hit a 3W from there. Not the way the rough is now. I tried to get down to the ball with a 3H, and did actually get it, but the rough was so thick that I couldn't get enough on it to move it more than about 125 yards. So instead of hitting a short iron in on my third, I still had 165 uphill into the wind and rain, which had started again. Ended up with a 2-putt bogey, indirectly resulting from my 2nd shot out of the unplayable rough.
It got me again on par 5, 9th when my 2nd shot found the left rough and ultimately hurt my approach shot. Should have been a simple 9iinto green, but club got hung up in rough and ball didn't make it over the hazard. Penalty/drop/58* wedge. Made a monster putt to save bogey, but still, after a great drive and pretty decent 3W 2nd shot into what is normally very playable rough, I feel like I got robbed as a result of the uncut, overgrown rough. Add wetness to it from all the rain and it is virtually unplayable. Certainly unfair. And definitely taller and thicker than any US Open contested in the past that I know of.
Playing 18 with Bernie tomorrow. Only hope is to keep everything in the short grass. Came close today, but paid dearly when I didn't.
