Played with Bernie. A bit cold to start, but got up into the 50s mid afternoon. Started out totally on my game. Was 1-over after 7 holes. Only bogey was after one of the longest drives I have ever hit on 2nd, and then hitting a sand wedge approach onto and over the back of the green by about a foot. Made a good chip back to within 4 feet, but missed the slider for a par save.
Feeling very confident when I got to uphil par 3 8th, was not sure if a 5i would be enough, so went with a hybrid. Hit it flush, well over the green and up the hill behind it, leaving me with a steep downhill AND with the ball extremely below my feet, for a near impossible shot. Needed to flop it, but from the lie I had, I knew it was going to be iffy. I tensed and did not get enough on it, but at least I didn't blow it over the green. Had to chip it only about 2 feet to reach green, but thought any more and it would roll out well past the pin. Hit it where I wanted, but it did not roll out like expected, leaving me a 10 foot putt, which I missed. Double. Then on 9th, shanked a 7i layup, leaving me much further out than I was planning. Funky lie for my 3rd into the green left me short by a few yards. Pitch was a bit too aggressive, going 15 feet past the hole. 2-putt bogey. Disappointing finish to the front after such a promising start.
A couple 3-putts hurt me badly on the back. Nor was I as sharp on the back as I have been with my irons lately. Had a couple poor shots and then I started to question what was wrong. Was lucky to finish with a decent score, holding on with my bare knuckles.
