Played with Bernie. Cold to start, but got nice quickly. Into the 50s. Put the new shaft in the driver yesterday. Didn't seem like it made much difference. Hit it decently all day, but not particularly long. Probably the cold. Played a TruSoft. Thought about switching back to a ProV once it warmed up, but stuck with the same TruSoft for the entire round.
Short game was good, as per usual. Made some impossible flops to short sided or downhill pins that Bernie was just amazed at. Then after he was having trouble in a bunker, I dropped a ball in the same bunker and gave him some pointers. Then I proceeded to hit it out of the bunker to 1 foot in my demonstration. He then followed my direction and tried and got it within 8 feet. He was very excited.
Birdie on 14th. Had 110 to the hole on approach. Hit a 50* wedge to 2 inches from short rough.
Hit two bad shots, both with ball well below feet, the weak spot in my game. Neither cost me too much.
Finding more distance with these new irons which got me in trouble on more than one occasion. Hit the new AP3 7i at least 10 yards longer than my AP2 7i, even in the cold temps. I expect it will be even longer when the temps get back in the 70s and 80s. Florida next week will be interesting. Had 154 to the pin from the right rough on 9th. Thinking a 6i would be too much, went with new AP3 7i. Got it flush and flew it over the green by 10 yards leaving myself a very difficult flop to a short-sided pin. Hit it perfect. Landed it exactly on my spot. It released what seemed a perfect speed and headed directly down the hill to the hole. But, it started to pick up speed as it got momentum down the hill. Struck the pin, but went right over the hole and rolled all the way to the bottom of the green, at least 25 feet away. 2 putt for bogey did not seem fair after such a perfect flop, exactly as planned.
On 13th, used new AP3 6i on approach after a poor 2nd shot. Hit it flush, right at the pin. Just kept flying. Had 160 to pin. It flew 1nearly 170 and ended up another 25 feet past that. In the cold! Love that I am getting this kind of distance, but it cost me again.
Found I was going left with my AP2s more than normal and was much more on target with my 5-7 AP3 irons, which are standard lie, as opposed to the AP2s which are 1* up. It's easier to draw the AP2s at 1* up, but may have to flatten them if it keeps up so all irons are standard. I'll play with the new and old a bit more before I make any decisions.
Double bogey on 10th was a result of rushing. Between Ralph stopping the mower for me on the tee and rushing the shot so as not to make him wait, and playing through the foursome in front of us in the fairway who was calling us through, I just did not hit a good drive. Totally rushed it. Ended up in right fairway bunker. Then while they waited on us, I rushed that one, and did not get it well enough to reach the green. Instead it rolled into the hazard. Penalty, pitch and 2-putt for double. I was pissed. I HATE playing through. I always rush.
Going to try to squeak in one more round before the FL trip.
