Finally made it over to PB Dye. With Keith for final day of his trip. 9 am start. Freezing cold. In the 40s and breezy to start. Don't know why I let him talk me into playing the Gold tees. We played with a single, John, who hit the ball farther off the tee than both of us and was a pretty good player. The Gold tees were far too long when the wind and cold was factored in, on top of how poorly I have been hitting my driver of late. Plus many distances shown on the card seem to be mis-marked, compared to what is shown on each tee.
It started to warm up and eventually made it into the high 60s. Seemed like the warmer it got, the better I began to play. Didn't have much of a swing at all with driver all day. Hit irons well for the most part.
The course itself is very gimmicky. Typical Dye family stuff. I wouldn't mind playing it again though. I feel I can do much better once I have some idea where you should and should not hit the ball. (And, once I get my driver back in the groove.) There are many many blind shots required, no matter how well you place your previous shot. I lost at least 2 or 3 shots due to having no idea what to expect over a hill or around a corner. And a few of the greens were downright circus attractions.
A decent back nine with 2 birdies gave me a decent enough score to be the shortest hitter in the group, but still have the lowest score in the threesome. So, there's that.
CeeBee says:I agree, it is kid of quirky. But I do like it. But not from 6700 yards.
