Hot. 90s. Started on back nine and played quite well. Continue to putt pretty well and iron play was pretty good. Could still use some yardage with the driver, but it has been acceptable.
Made par from the fairway bunker on 14 with 9i to about 15 feet. Just missed the birdie putt.
Birdie on 16 after 5 iron approach to 3 1/2 feet. Got in trouble on 17 with 5 iron off tee which I expected to fade a bit, but instead it went dead straight, into left greenside bunker, pin high. Got out with no problem, but ball didn't run down the slope to the hole as I was expecting. Somehow, it stopped. The putt was a steep downhiller, that once I got it started, there was no stopping it without it going in the hole. It didn't. Kept rolling about 8 feet by. Missed the comebacker badly. Worst putt of the round. Ended with 3-putt double.
Nice chip to 3 feet from deep greenside rough on 18 to help get me up and down for par.
On the front, hit perfect drive on 2nd, over left fairway bunker to about 50 yards out. Pitch and 2-putt for par.
Played the approach to par 5 5th poorly after a good drive and 4W second shot. Had a 40 yard pitch to get on in regulation, but got it thin out of the right rough. Ball hit green but rolled off the back into thick rough. Chipped on, but screwed up putting badly. 3 putts for double. I think I was steaming due to the thin pitch and didn't really focus on the putting enough. Worst putted green of the day.
On the steep uphill par 3 8th, I couldn't decide between 7i or 6i. Pin was up front only 135 yards, but with the added slope was playing about 155. Didn't want to be short and roll back down the steep grade in front, so thought if I flew a 6 iron a little long it would catch the slope from the second tier to the first and roll back to the pin. If I didn't get all of it, it should still reach the pin. I hit it on the screws and flew it over the backstop to the top tier, all the way to the back of the green. There was no way to stop the putt coming back down to the front-tiered pin, again, without it going in the hole. Hit a good line and speed, but just missed the hole and continued 10 feet by. Another 3 putt, this time for a GIR bogey.
After the round, I went back out and played the 12th again for the hell of it, the toughest hole on the course (IMO), this time from the blue tees. Decent drive ended in right rough. Then blasted a 3W approach from 210 yards, right at the back pin, but it bounced off the back of the green. Ball mark was 2 feet from pin. Made a nice chip to 2 feet and got down in 1 for par.
